Abstract

Objective To design and test a self-hearing-test system based on the Internet plus and iOS. Methods A por-table self-hearing-test system was composed using an iPad on the iOS 7.0.4 system, EarPods insert phones and iPad digi-tal audio system. The test signals were calibrated using an artificial ear. Standard pure tone audiometry and self-hearing-test using the designed system were conducted in 20 normal hearing volunteers (40 ears) after calibration. Thresholds at all fre-quencies from both test modalities were compared. Results The differences between self-hearing-test thresholds and pure tone audiometry thresholds were 2.5 ± 4.629 dB at 125 Hz, 1.875 ± 4.581 dB at 250 Hz, 3.125 ± 4.581 dB at 500 Hz, 0.625 ± 4.955 dB at 1000 Hz,-1.25 ± 3.536 dB at 2000 Hz,-6.875 ± 4.581 dB at 4000 Hz and 0 ± 11.952 dB at 8000 Hz. Self-hear-ing-test environment was considered to affect the test results of the system. Conclusions A self-hearing-test system has been established for normal hearing people. The test reliability of this system among hearing-impaired people need to be further evaluated.
