Abstract

A series of cerium-doped TiO2 photocatalysts with petal-like nano-architecture were prepared by hydrothermal method using Ce(SO4)2·4H2O and Ti(SO4)2 as precursors, glucan as template. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), nitrogen adsorption-desorption measurements, IR spectroscopy and UV-Vis spectroscopy (UV-Vis) were employed to characterize the morphology, crystal structure, surface structure, and optical absorption properties of the samples. The photocatalytic performance of the samples was studied by photodegradation methylene blue in water with UV and sun light irradiation, the final degradation products were confirmed by measuring the chemical oxygen demand (COD) of the solution before and after degradation. The results show that the nano-TiO2 materials have petal-like structures, the petal-like cerium-doped TiO2 photocatalysts exhibit higher photocatalytic activities for the degradation of methylene blue than P25 and un-doped TiO2 in both UV and sun light. Moreover, the petal-like TiO2 photocatalysts can be easily recovered from the medium and reused without any mass loss.
