Abstract

Objective To valuate the changes of iodine levels in special population in Qianxinan prefecture after modification of iodine content standard in edible salt in order to provide evidence for the interventional measures suitable. Methods Samples of household edible salt were randomly selected in Qianxinan prefecture.Iodine content in edible salt was determined by the general method in the salt industry. Palpation method was used for thyroid examination in children aged 8 ~10 years.Arsenic and cerium catalysis spectrophotometry was used to detect iodine content in urine. Results The incidence of goiter was 1 .19% among children aged 8 ~10 years in Qianxinan prefecture in 2015.The proportion of qualified iodized salt was 97.25% in households consumption,and the coverage rate of iodized salt was 99.38%.The median of urine iodine content in children and pregnant women were 210.57 μg·L -1 ,161 .88 μg· L -1 respectively.Compared with iodine in 201 1 before modification of iodine content standard in edible salt, there was no change in the incidence of goiter (P >0.05 ).The median of iodine content in edible salt per household had decreased from 201 1 to 2015(P <0.05 ),and that in urine of pregnant woman and children aged 8 ~10 years had also decreased from 201 1 to 2015 (all P <0.05 ).Conclusion The iodine content standard in edible salt (30 ± 9 )mg·kg -1 was considered rational level in Qianxinan prefecture after the standard modification.However,it would be essential to adopt monitoring and interventional measures for special population(children and pregnant woman)to eliminate the of iodine deficiency in the long term.
