Designing and preparing of ESP coursebooks for non-English major postgraduates:Lessons from the post-use evaluation of a coursebook

Abstract
This paper attempts to explore the designing and preparing of ESP (English for specific purposes) textbooks for Chinese university/college students. To acquire their post-use evaluation of A Coursebook on Materia Medica, a questionnaire was conducted to 46 first-year postgraduates in Beijing University of Chinese Medicine who attended the English course for Chinese Materia Medica in the years 2014 and 2015. Feedbacks were also obtained from 4 teachers who had the experience of using the book to teach the course. Both the students and the teachers commented that the logic organization, content selection and authentic language of the materials were the strengths of the textbook. However, the overall difficulty and the layout design of the textbook were subject to complaints. It is important that ESP textbook design and preparation should address the following seven principles, i. e. the principle of needs, interest, naturalness, thought, readability, skill-orientation, and multi-modality. Hopefully, our study may provide empirical data for the development of ESP textbook research in the future, virtually in the designing and preparing of ESP textbooks per se, and promote the in-depth exploration of ESP teaching material research.关键词
