Abstract
The scale and density of China’s urbanization are unprecedented in the history of the world. The “classical” single-centered city is no more. Instead, in some parts of the country, such as the Yangtze Delta, new urban formations have emerged, which chal enge the way planning is being done and which require a new language and way of thinking about cities. The term “post-urban” in the title refers to the present transition from one kind of urbanism to this new form, which I cal “urban super-organism.” After some discussion of its characteristics, I address the several ways that planning practices may have to change in order to cope successful y with the coming 300 mil ion peasant farmers who wil have to be absorbed into urban life within the next 20 years. Many of these new urbanites wil be settled in the Yangtze Delta area, with Shanghai in the lead.关键词
