«菜根谭»“君子”英译“Junzi Gentleman”之理据探析
Motivation for the English Version of"Junzi Gentleman"in Chinese Classics Cai Gen Tan

Abstract
Most of English versions of "Junzi",one of the high-frequency words in Chinese traditional culture,are identical with minor differences.In translating the word "junzi" in the Chinese classics Cai Gen Tan ,Professor Jiang Jiansong comes up with a quite distinctive English rendition of "junzi gentle-man",which is the combination of both Chinese word"junzi"and the English word"gentleman"and there-fore seems somewhat redundant and clumsy to be criticized by some researchers.Therefore,the paper thoroughly discusses the motivations for this unique translation of these two words from the perspectives of diachronic evolution and synchronic comparison,the internal and external factors in translation,the equal dialogue between cultures involved and their discursive constructions,the content and the form,the lan-guage and the culture,translator's preferences and the readers'acceptance,etc.In this way,it sheds light on the pragmatic feasibility of the version and its profound social and cultural significance.关键词
