Abstract

The flame-retarded non-woven paper based polyvinyl chloride ( PVC) wallcoverings were successfully prepared, using non-woven paper as base material and adding inorganic flame retardants and flame-retarded plasticizer as additives. Flame retardancy, thermo stability, smoke suppression and mechanical properties were tested regarding to the prepared wallcoverings. The results showed that 2ZnO•3B2 O3•3. 5H2 O could improve flame retardancy and thermo stability of non-woven paper based PVC wallcoverings;plasticizer tricresyl phosphate increased flame retardancy of the prepared materials auxiliarily. Also, flame-retarded non-woven paper-based PVC wallcoverings with higher flame retardancy, greater smoke suppression and stronger mechanical property was prepared using non-woven paper as base material, using 2ZnO•3B2 O3•3.5H2 O as inorganic flame retardant, and using tricresyl phosphate as plasticizer. For the flame-retarded non-woven paper based PVC wallcoverings, the limit oxygen index reached 32.5 and increased by 51.2%, maximal smoke density was 11.8% and decreased by 21.9%, and the horizontal and longitudinal wet tensile strength reached 1.20 and 1.23 kN•m-1 and increased by 6.2% and 7.0% respectively. Meanwhile, its flame retardancy satisfied the requirements about flame retardancy for material Class B1 listed in Chinese National Standards GB 8624-2012. This research created an effective path to prepare non-woven paper based PVC wallcoverings with high flame retardancy.
