Abstract

Objective To explore the effect of self-assessment and peer assessment in nursing skill training for college students in neurosurgery. Methods A total of 94 nursing students with the internship from July 2014 to June 2015 were divided into control group with 48 students and experiment group with 46 students. Clinical nursing skill training was performed in both groups based on internship plan. Traditional teaching method was conducted in control group while traditional method combined with self-assessment and peer assessment in experiment group. Students ’ performance in both group in the final examination of the training and in rotation examination was compared. Results In terms of changing tracheal cushions for patients with tracheotomy and closed sputum suction technique in the final examination of the training, the score of students in experiment group was 90.71 ±3.71 and 92.35 ±4.45 respectively, and that in rotation examination was 91.17±4.31, and 92.98±5.11 respectively. The comparison between the performance of students in two groups indicated statistical significance (P<0.05). Conclusion Self-assessment and peer assessment is effective for improving nursing skill and nursing teaching quality for college students in neurosurgery.
