Abstract

Based on the complexity of the falling rock protection barriers and the efficiency to study different system parameters, the numerical method is becoming an important method to explore the dynamic mechanical response of the passive flexible protection system. To study the energy dissipation and buffer action of the ring-brake energy dissipater in the passive flexible protection against rockfall, an actual passive flexible protection prototype is employed to establish two finite element models for flexible protection system with and without ring-brake energy dissipater. Based on ANSYS/LS-DYNA, the dynamic response of the two finite element models with different impact energy and impact position is analyzed. The results show that the ring-brake energy dissipater can enhance the flexibility of the passive flexible protection and improve the performance of the site of action, while the energy dissipation capacity of the passive flexible protection is also significantly improved. Meanwhile, the comparative analysis of the numerical results provides references for the coming experiment design to calibrate the numerical model and identify the governing characteristics of the components.
