Characteristic Analysis of a Novel Linear Eddy Current Brake with Serial Magnetic Circuit and Hybrid Excitation

Abstract
In this paper, a novel linear eddy current brake with serial magnetic circuitand hybrid excitationis presented. The air gap magnetic field is generated by the exciting windings and permanent magnets. Therefore the hybrid excitation eddy current brake has many advantages, such as large air gap flux density, controllability, and low excitation loss. Firstly, the structure and operation principle are introduced. Secondly,the expressions of the eddy loss and braking force are deduced using the equivalent magnetic circuit method and the layer theory approach,namely the analytical modelof the linear eddy current brake with serial magnetic circuit and hybrid excitation is set up. The validity of theanalytical model is confirmed using the two-dimensional finite element analysis. Finally,the relationship between the force characteristics and the design parameters of the hybrid excitation eddy current brake is analyzed to give theoretical basis for the optimization design of the hybrid excitation eddy current brake.关键词
