Abstract

Objective To explore the effect of pretreatment with pinus massoniana bark extract( PMBE) on the acid resistance and an-ti-demineralization ability of root dentin. Methods Forty root dentin blocks were randomly divided into distilled deionized water ( DDW) group, NaF group, 4% PMBE group and 8% PMBE group according to the different treatment solution in pH cycling. Speci-mens experienced pH cycling for 8 d. The surface micro-hardness of dentin before and after pH cycling was determined and the differ-ence of surface micro-hardness before and after pH cycling (ΔSMH) was calculated. The morphology of dentin surface after pH cycling&nbsp;was observed, and the calcium depletion rate ( CDR) in acid buffer also was measured after pH cycling. Results The surface micro-hardness had no significant difference before the pH cycle among four groups(P>0. 05). The ΔSMH in 4% and 8% PMBE groups were significantly lower than that in DDW group(P<0. 05), but there was no significant difference between 8% PMBE group and NaF group(P>0. 05). The CDR in both PMBE groups were significantly lower than in DDW group(P<0. 05). The CDR in 8% PMBE group was significantly higher than that in NaF group(P<0. 05), but significantly lower than 4% PMBE group(P<0. 05). The den-tin tubules were completely opened in DDW group, but they were basically closed in NaF group. The dentin tubules were partially opened with a shuttle shaped or narrow slit in PMBE groups. Conclusion PMBE could improve the acid resistance and anti-deminer-alization ability of root dentin, and the effect of 8% PMBE solution is better. PMBE has a certain role in the prevention of dentin hy-persensitivity.
