Abstract

A front-engine rear-wheel drive (FR) car makes whistling noise in the process of acceleration. The whistling noise becomes particularly conspicuous at a certain engine speed. Test data shows that the vibration and radiation noise of the housing of the rear-axle main decelerator have corresponding spectral characteristics. Signals of interior noise and noise vibration of the main decelerator housing in constant speed and acceleration operation conditions are collected respectively. Through the spectral analysis and modulation spectrum analysis, it is found that the whistling noise is resulted from the gear vibration modulation induced by the gear meshing of the main decelerator. This modulation takes the higher-order harmonic frequency of the gear meshing frequency of the main decelerator as the carrier frequency, and the rotating frequency of the driving gear shaft of the main decelerator as the modulation frequency. The interior whistling can be reduced significantly by raising the gear processing precision. The entire test and analysis process presents a new idea for troubleshooting of abnormal gear noises.
