Study on the degradation of phenol by different metal oxide electrodes

Abstract

Ti/SnO2-Sb electrodes was prepared by electrodeposition for the inner coating layer and thermal depo-sition for the outer layer. Ti/SnO2-Sb/PbO2 and Ti/SnO2-Sb/MnO2 electrodes were prepared by electrodeposition. Three electrodes were characterized by linear sweep voltammetry (LSV),scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and accelerated lifetime test. With phenol as a model,the electrochemical degradation performance of the prepared electrodes were investigated. The experimental results show that the degradation of phenol corresponds to the first-order kinetics on three electrodes. When the initial concentration of phenol is 100 mg·L-1 and the current density is 10 mA·cm-2, the degradation ratios on Ti/SnO2-Sb,Ti/SnO2-Sb/PbO2 and Ti/SnO2-Sb/MnO2 electrodes are 99.4%, 98.2%, and 63.6%, respectively. The Ti/SnO 2-Sb/PbO2 electrode is consid-ered to be the best electrode to degrade phenol for its longest accelerated life (41 h),higher oxygen evolution po-tential (1.78 V) and better electrocatalytic activity.
