Effects of plasma treatment on properties of poplar LVL

Abstract
The non⁃structural laminated veneer lumber ( LVL) was prepared by poplar veneers treated with atmospheric pressure plasma. This study focused on investigating the effects of plasma treatment power and rate on properties of LVL. It was found that the atmospheric pressure plasma treatment significantly affected the mechanical properties of LVL. The results demonstrated that after the atmospheric pressure plasma treatment, the bonding strength of poplar LVL improved significantly, and the impregnated peel ratio of LVL decreased by 59.3% when the treatment power of 4.5 kW and a rate of 2 m/min were used. Besides, the atmospheric pressure plasma treatment could also enhance surface wettability of LVL because it can profoundly influence the physical and chemical properties of poplar veneer surface. When poplar LVL was treated under 6 kW and 8 m/min, the initial contact and balance angles of urea formaldehyde resins at the surface of LVL decreased by 25.4% and 36.8%, respectively. More information was revealed by the FTIR analysis. It was indicated that the amounts of surface functional groups such as carbonyl, keto, conjugated carbonyl, carboxyl groups and C—O increased through the FTIR analysis. The improvement of surface wettability and increase of oxygen⁃containing functional groups induced by the atmospheric pressure plasma treatment were both beneficial to the enhancement of the adhesive properties of poplar LVL. The comprehensive analysis of chemistry and physics confirmed that mechanical properties of poplar LVL can be greatly enhanced by the atmospheric pressure plasma treatment.关键词
