Urbanization and Income Disparity between Urban and Rural Areas---An Analysis Based on Provincial Panel Data

Abstract
〔Abstract〕 In this paper , we use the national data to examine dynamic changes of urbanization and income disparity between urban and rural areas , and find that they perform inverted U change with inflexion point in 2005 . According to characteristics of panel data of 1996 to 2013 , this paper uses spatial panel analysis to investigate in stages and the result shows that urbanization widens income disparity between urban and rural areas from 1996 to 2004 while it narrows the income gap from 2005 to 2013 . Also we use provincial panel data of 1996 to 2013 to estimate impact of urbanization on income disparity between urban and rural areas , and the results show that the regions in which urbanization narrows income gap between urban and rural areas are almost estern coastal provinces . It can be seen that the effects of urbanization on income gap between urban and rural areas are different in stages and among regions . Therefore , urbanization can be seen as a mean to decrease income gap between urban and rural areas in the present and in the future . However , it depends on improvements and innovations of related policy if urbanization really plays the role . For the regions with economic development stage lagged behind , we shoud actively promote the arrival of the effect that urbanization narrows income disparity between urban and rural areas .关键词
