Effectiveness of Adsorption for Heavy Metals by Sulfhydryl Cellulose(SC)

Abstract

A new environmental material was synthesized and its usage in heavy metal adsorption in water was studied in this paper. Sulfhydryl cellulose (SC)was synthesized through reaction between cellulose and sulfhydryl. This reaction was taken place in a mixture of acetic anhydride and acetic acid. Synthesized SC was characterized by IR,and results show that carboxyl and sulfhydryl peaks are at 1 732 cm - 1 and 2 548 cm - 1 ,confirming that SC is the target product. SC’s adsorption properties of Cu2 + and Zinc2 + ions were studied. It shows that the saturation adsorption capacity of Cu2 + and Zinc2 + ions is 251 mg/ g and 198 mg/ g,and activation energies of the adsorption are 91. 5 kJ/ mol and 72. 7 kJ/ mol respectively when the temperature is 318 K and pH is between 4. 5 ~ 5 and 6 ~ 6. 5. Besides,both adsorption processes fit with pseudo-second-order kinetics model and adsorption rates increase as the temperature increase. These two adsorption patterns fit Langmuir isotherms,which mean they are both monomolecular layer adsorption. Meanwhile, the main force of chemical adsorption process is coordination bond. The used sulfhydryl cellulose can be recycled after eluted by dilute hydrochloric acid,dilute sodium hydroxide solution and distilled water in turn. As a result,sulfhydryl cellulose can be applied to the treatment of waste water polluted by Cu,Zink,etc.
