Abstract

An adsorption-microfiltration membrane (MF) separation system was developed based upon adsorption and membrane separation principles for carbon source recovery from municipal wastewater of different wastewater treatment plants.The results showed that the reductions in chemical oxygen demand (COD) following treatment with the adsorption-MF system were mainly due to the removal of colloidal COD (60% to 76%),while the removal of soluble COD was less extensive (29% to 38%).Different hydraulic residence times (HRT) generally did not affect the performance of the system.Considering the carbon source recovery rate and the economic costs of system operation,the optimized parameters of the adsorption-MF separation system were set as follows:sludge retention time (SRT) of 2 d,HRT of 22 min.This process showed good performance in relation to quickly trapping and concentrating influent COD,and the recovery rate of the system could reach up to around 50%.
