Abstract
Objective To assess the feasibility, safety and effectiveness of modified Politzer inflation for otitis media with effusion in children. Methods Children diagnosed with otitis media with effusion were randomly divided into four groups. Children in the control group received no treatment but careful observation for three months. Children in the medi-cine therapy group were treated with nasal spray, oral antihistamines and mucus-diluting agents for 1 month followed by ob-servation for 2 months. Those children in the inflation group underwent modified Politzer inflation for 1 month followed by observation for 2 months. Those in the medicine and inflation group received both medicine and modified Politzer inflation treatments for 1 month followed by observation for 2 months. Results After 1 month, all children receiving modified Politzer inflation were able to cooperate to complete the treatment, with no serious adverse reactions and discomfort. At 1 month after treatment, the inflation and medicine plus inflation groups showed higher treatment effectiveness than the others two groups, which lasted through the 2 months observation. There was no difference between the inflation and medicine plus inflation groups. Air bone gap in these two groups were significantly reduced. Conclusion Modified Politzer inflation is feasible, effective and safe for otitis media with effusion in children, and can effectively remove middle ear effusion and reduce the need for surgery .关键词
