Abstract

The purpose of the present study was to develop an inactivated bivalentRiemerella anatipestifer vaccine containing serotypes 2 and 11.Riemerella anatipestifer strains RA1325 (serotype 2) andRA1229 (serotype 11) were cultured, inactivated and concentrated separately and mixed before formulation of a bivalent vaccine. To determine the immunogenicity of the vaccine, seven-day-old Muscovy ducks were subcutaneously vaccinated and then challenged with the live vaccine strains at days 7, 14, 21, 56, 63, 70 and 77 post challenge. Antibodies in serum samples were determined in ELISA every 7 days post vaccination. The results showed that the protection rate was over 80% at day 14 post challenge. The immunity duration of the vaccine was 60 days. The titers of antibodies during 14 to 63 days post vaccination were at a high level. The preliminary results indicated that this bivalent vaccine might be used to prevent serotypes 2 and 11Riemerella anatipestifer infection in ducks.
