Abstract

Research on strength characteristics of subgrade soils under unsaturated conditions has great significance for the design and construction of subgrade. In order to study the volume change behavior and strength characteristics of an unsaturated subgrade soil under different suction stages, a suction controlled unsaturated compression consolidation test is designed for the unsaturated performance of a subgrade soil. Experimental results show that the subgrade soil has a small swelling deformation. The volume change characteristics are obtained by a suction controlled method. As soil suction increases the void ratio decreases. According to the unsaturated compression consolidation tests results, the yield stress of the subgrade soil with different suctions were obtained. As the suction of the soil increases from 0 to 110 MPa, the yield stress increases from 200kPa to 1. 05MPa. What’s more, the tests results of the yield stress with different suctions are verified by classical model. The calculation results show that the compression consolidation test results can well described by the BBM model proposed by Alonso et al. (1990).
