Influence Factors of Uncertainty in Illness among Family Members of Cancer Patients in ICU

Abstract
Objective To describe the uncertainty in illness among family members of cancer patients in ICU, and to explore its influence factors. Methods The measurement instruments included the Inventory of demographic characteristics of family members, Mishel Uncertainty in Illness Scale-family Member Form (MUIS-FM, Chinese version) and Simplified Coping Style Questionnaire (SCSQ) and the conditions of patients were obtained from medical records. The multi-variate stepwise regression was used to analyze the influence factors of uncertainty in illness in family members. Results The score of uncertainty in illness among family members was 88.76±12.22. The reasons for patients admitted to ICU, the gender of family members ,the acute physiology and chronic health evaluation score and the positive coping style entered the regression equation of uncertainty in illness (P<0.05). Conclusion The uncertainty in illness among family members of cancer patients in ICU is relatively high. Medical staff should pay more attention to family members of patients transferred from other wards, those of female patients and cancer patients. In order to reduce the impact of uncertainty in illness, it’s important to provide more information and psychological support for family members,also to encourage family members to take more positive coping styles.关键词
