Abstract
OBJECTIVETo study the existence of vasculogenic mimicry(VM) and the expression of epithelial-mesenchymal transition(EMT) -related markers, and their relation with the lymph node metastasis of nasopharyngeal carcinoma(NPC).METHODSThe expression of E-cadherin, Twist and Vimentin protein were detected by immunohistochemistry in 82 samples of NPC and 20 samples of inflammatory nasopharyngeal mucosa. The presence of VM was observed by CD31 combined with PAS stain. The clinical significance of EMT and VM were then analyzed using statistical method.RESULTSThe positive rate of VM was 28.05%(23/82) in NPC. The bivariate analysis showed VM is positively correlated with lymphatic metastasis in NPC(χ2=6.927,P=0.008). E-cadherin expression was down-regulated in 27 NPC cases, and the expression of Vimentin and Twist were upregulated in 23 and 35 cases respectively. The bivariate analysis showed EMT-related markers were closely correlated with lymphatic metastasis in NPC(χ2=6.411,P=0.011;χ2=14.576,P=0.000). There was a positive correlation between the expression of VM and EMT-related markers(allP<0.000). CONCLUSION VM and EMT exists in NPC and correlated with the lymphatic metastasis. VM is closely correlated with EMT, they had predictive value for the prognosis of NPC.关键词
