Abstract

Objective To study the harmfulness of Kaolin dust and the incidence of Kaolinosis.Methods A cross-sectional epidemiological investigation was carried out in 5 Kaolin processing enterprises and 622 Kaolin dust-exposed workers in Maoming city.Results The overproofrate of short time allowable concentration (C-STEL) was 2.53%,while the overproof rate of time-weighted average concentration (C-TWA) was 1.90%.The content of free silicon dioxide (SiO2) was 1.25% on average in Kaolin dust.Nine cases of Kaolinosis in stage 1 were detected in 622 cases of dust-exposed workers in a rate of 1.45%.The sufferers were all of Kaolin packers in average age of 47.43 years old and average time of dust exposure in 13.91 years.Patients with Kaolinosis had cough (66.67%),sputum (66.67%),chest pain (33.33%),and other symptoms.The main clinical signs were dry rales (33.33%) and coarse breath sounds (22.22%).X-ray chest films showed small circular shadows in a diameter between 1.5 to 3.0 mm,which were called in "q" shadows.The rate of damage in pulmonary ventilation and loss or most loss of labor capacity was 33.33% respectively.Conclusion The Kaolin dust has more serious harmful to the health of exposed workers.Kaolinosis is featured by more symptoms,signs and "q" shadows in chest X-ray film,damage of pulmonary ventilation and evident loss of labor capacity.It is recommended to list Kaolinosis in the classification and catalog of the national occupational diseases.
