新疆是典型的文化多样性地区,而且,多样性的文化也形成了多样性的民族体育.这些多样性的民族体育在新疆古代社会发展的不同历史阶段起到了重要的作用:史前至秦朝,其主要承担着生存技能和宗教祭祀的作用;汉唐以降,则主要是征战的需要、娱乐和文化交流的作用;如今,新疆多样性的民族体育更是在区域文化大发展大繁荣中展现出更多的文化吸引力、影响力、凝聚力和发展力,从而开启了新疆民族体育发展的新局面.
