Abstract
Taking a rigid retaining wall withgranular backfill for example, it is assumed that the failure surface is a plane through the wall heel and the soil arch in the backfill takes the form of acircle,the differential level layer methodis modified considering themeanshear stress betweenlevelsoil layers in the failure wedge, and then anew formulation is proposed for calculating the active earth pressure on the retaining wall undergoing horizontal translation. In order to verifythe accuracy of theproposed formulation,the predictions from the equation are compared withboth the existing full-scale test results andthe values fromtheexisting equations. The calculatedresults show that the mean shear stress between level soil layersis related to the inclination of wall back face, theangle of wallfriction and the internal friction angle of backfill, and its distribution along the wall height is nonlinear like that of activeearth pressure.For thewall with a vertical back face or a steep and rough one,the point of application of the resultantactive earth pressureby the proposedformulation considering the mean shear stress between levelsoil layersishigher than thatby the Coulomb’s theory,andlower than thatbythe existing theories whichthemeanshear stress betweenlevelsoil layers isnegligible. But the conclusionwill be just the opposite for the wall with a relatively gentle and smooth back face. In addition,whetherthe mean shear stressbetweenlevelsoil layers is takeninto considerationor not, the height of the resultantactive earth pressure will decrease with the increase of the inclination of the back face.关键词
