Social Reform and Space Design:the Creation of Canton Y.M.C.A. Building in China
摘要
Abstract
The Y.M.C.A. building at Canton Bund is one of the earliest buildings by Y.M.C.A. in China. Architect Harry Hussey programmed and designed the building based on the objective of developing a whole individual in"moral education, intel ectual development, physical fitness, and social skil s". With the help of the local architectural firm Purnel& Paget, Harry Hussey also made adjustment to the building to adapt to local climate and construction techniques. This article aims to unveil the design strategy of the Y.M.C.A. building by analyzing it's construction process and its key architectural elements. It also discusses how the Y.M.C.A. building achieve its aims of reshaping the youths and reforming the society through tangible architecture elements including the building's site selection, programming, space design, architectural form and building techniques.关键词
