Abstract

This work is aimed to investigate the influence of nanoparticle shape on the electrical properties of nanocomposite dielectrics. By using boron nitride (BN) nanoparticles with different shape as nanofiller and linear low density polyethylene (LLDPE) as matrix, nanocomposites with 0.5% to 2.0% BN were prepared. The authors investigated the dispersion of BN in LLDPE, crystallization and melting behavior of the nanocomposites, broadband dielectric spectroscopy of the nanocomposites, space charge behavior and direct current breakdown strength of the nanocomposites. It was found that the shape of BN nanoparticles does affect the breakdown strength of the nanocomposites. BN nanosheets slightly increase the breakdown strength of the nanocomposites while BN nanospheres slightly decrease the breakdown strength of the nanocomposite. The shape of BN nanoparticles shows no influence on the crystallization and melting, dielectric constant and dielectric loss tangent of the nanocomposites. Both nanoparticles can suppress the space charge injection and the make the space charge decay slow in the nanocomposites. It should be noted that the BN nanosheets may affect the space charge waveform.
