Abstract

Good bonding quality between the agriculture and forestry biomass material and the adhesive is a key factor in affecting the performance of the bio⁃composites. Though the surfaces of the agriculture and forestry biomass material are rich in polar functional groups which can be bonded with synthetic adhesives, appropriate surface activa⁃tion is required for those surfaces which are polluted by dust particles in the air or covered with hydrophobic extrac⁃tives, cutin, wax, silica, and some non⁃polar extracts, preventing adhesives from wetting, spreading, and penetrating the surfaces. Plasma, as one of the four fundamental states of matter, contains polar species with high energy, such as electrons, ions, electric neutral molecules, atoms, photons, and free radicals. When the surfaces of the material are treated by plasma, the surface properties of the material will be changed, such as thermal corrosion, evaporation, cross⁃linking, degradation, oxidation. Over the past decades, the plasma has been widely applied for modifying poly⁃meric materials. Previous researches have paid attention to the surface modification for agricultural and forestry biomass material since 1990s and achieved a breakthrough: 1) the mechanism of plasma treatment to improve the bonding performance of agro⁃forestry biomass materials was elucidated;2) the surface plasma treatment technology of agricultural and forestry biomass materials was developed; 3) the industrial equipment for the continuous automatic plasma treatment of agricultural and forestry biomass material was manufactured. Based on reviewing the progress of this study, the authors put forward some suggestions for future research on surface plasma treatment of agricultural and forestry biomass materials.
