Abstract

Objective To investigate the knowledge, attitude and practice (KAP) of dietary self-management of patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), and to provide evidence for corresponding nursing. Methods Totally 345 patients with T2DM were investigated using general information questionnaire and diabetes dietary self-management questionnaire for their KAP of dietary self-management. Results The total score of dietary knowledge of patients was 18.99 ±6.19 and the patients knew least about “what are the first selection of food when feeling hungry (not in the condition of low blood sugar)?”, and the item of “foods with few influence on blood sugar?” scored highest. The total score of attitude was 16.00 (15.00 ,17.00) and the patients knew least about the items of“foods rich in cellulose can reduce postprandial hyperglycemia reaction” and “moderate foods rich in fat benefits the control of diabetic vascular complications”. The total score of practice was 12.22±3.48 and the item of “consuming quality protein every day”scored highest. Conclusion Patients with T2DM score lowly in terms of dietary self-management knowledge and they have positive attitude toward dietary self-management but their practice needs to be enhanced. It is significant to strengthen health education for patients with T2DM to improve their dietary compliance.
