Expression of HMGB1 in infants with intussusception and clinical significance

Abstract
Objective To evaluate the expression and clinical significance of serum high mobility group box-1 protein (HMGB1) in infants with intussusception. Methods Eighty-nine infants with intussusception admitted to our department between October 2010 and June 2015 were enrolled in this prospective study, and 89 health children having physical examination during the same period were selected into control group. Interleukin-6 (IL-6), tumor necrosis factor α (TNF-α) and HMGB1 were estimated at the time of admission. Results Children with intussusception had higher levels of HMGB1, IL-6 and TNF-α when compared with the control group ( <0.05). HMGB1 was in positive correlations with IL-6 and TNF-α ( <0.05) in children with intussusception. Using the ROC curve, the boundary value of HMGB1 was 12.35 ng/ml. The sensitivity and specificity of HMGB1 for the diagnosis of intussusception were 70.79% and 79.78%, respectively. Conclusions Serum level of HMGB1 increases in the infants with intussusception. Early detection of serum HMGB1 may have certain significance for the diagnosis of intussusception in infants.关键词
