Relationship between 5-HTTLPR genotype,gender and hippocampal volumes in right-handed Han Chinese students

Abstract
Objective To investigate the relationship between 5-HTTLPR,gender and hippocampal volumes in right-handed Han Chinese students.Methods Six hundred and sixty-three freshmen were selected as the subjects.5-HTTLPR genotype was detected by polymerase chain reaction.According to genotypes (L/L,L/S,and S /S),they were divided into three groups with 18 subjects.Siemens 3.0T magnetic resonance imaging was used for scanning,hippocampus were segre-gated layer by layer with ITK-SNAP software.In this study,multivariate analysis of variance was used to analyze the inter-action between gender and genotype to hippocampal volume.Results The raw and normalized volumes of the different sides of hippocampus in 54 students were significantly different (all P <0.05).There was no significant difference in raw volumes,normalized volumes and cranial cavity volumes of different sides of hippocampus on these three groups (all P >0.05).There were significant differences in raw hippocampal volumes of right side,normalized hippocampal volumes and cranial cavity volumes of both sides between different genders (all P <0.05).There were significant differences in the effects of gender on the left and right hippocampal volumes (P <0.05).Nevertheless,we did not find significant differ-ences between the influence of genotype and the effects of interaction with gender on raw and normalized hippocampal vol-ume in different sides (all P >0.05).Conclusions It is suggested that different gender rather than genotype result in dif-ferent hippocampal volumes in the right-handed Han Chinese students.However,there is no interaction between gender and genotype to hippocampal volume.关键词
