An Index to Determine the Effect of DFIG's Reactive Power/Terminal Voltage Control on Electromechanical Oscillation Modes

Abstract
A grid-connected wind farm can adopt fixed reactive power output control or terminal voltage control. Effect of those two types of control on power system small-signal angular stability is different. In this paper, for a wind farm which is aggregated as a DFIG, an index is proposed to determine which type of control is more beneficial to system small-signal angular stability. Computation of the proposed index does not rely on the information of dynamic models of both the wind farm and reactive power/voltage controller. Hence the index can help the planning of grid connection of wind farms to choose the type of control in order to benefit system small-signal angular stability. In the paper, mathematical derivation of the proposed index is presented. An example power system is used to validate and demonstrate the application of the index in planning the grid connection of wind farms.关键词
