Abstract

Objective:To observe the effects of hydrosurgery debridement system (hereinafter referred to as Waterjet technology) on the treatment of upper extremity arc burns.Methods: Of 53 patients with upper extremity arc burns admitted in the Shanghai Electric Power Hospital from May 2014 to May 2015, 26 cases received Waterjet debridement (observation group) and 27 cases were treated with conventional debridement techniques, including eschar grinding and shaving (conventional treatment group). After debridement, the wound surfaces in both groups were covered with biological dressing (gene transfected-pigskin). The operative time of debridement, the wound healing time and the scar hyperplasia were compared between the two groups.Results: All the patients were followed-up for 3-6 months. The operative time of debridement and the wound healing time were shorter, and the scar hyperplasia was milder in observation group than in conventional treatment group with statistical significance (P<0.05).Conclusions: Waterjet technology may shorten the operative time of debridement and the wound healing time in treatment of upper extremity arc burns with good wound healing and mild scar hyperplasia.
