Abstract

The effect of limestone powder on the strength, reaction products and microstructure of geopolymer was investigated. The results show that limestone powder has a significant influence on the strength of geopolymer, but some differences between 3-d and 28-d strengths occur. There is no observable reduction of the 3-d strength with limestone powder of less than 15% (in mass), but a remarkable deterioration of 3-d strength appears at a greater dosage of limestone powder due to the presence of micrometer macropores and the weakened interface between limestone particles and gels. The 28-d strength decreases gradually with increasing the dosage of limestone powder. Little novel product phases appear and limestone powder still exists as calcite. The porosity of 3-d geopolymer with limestone powder of less than 15% decreases, while the value of porosity is similar in the 28-d geopolymer with and without limestone powder.
