Composition and functions of vernix caseosa as well as its potential bionic applications

摘要

Abstract

Composition and functions of vernix caseosa (VC)were briefed. Status of research work results with respect to VC around the world were reviewed. Functions and action mechanism of the VC,such as skin moisturization,anti-bacterial infection,pH adjustment and epidermal barrier reparation were summarized. Benificial functions for protecting fetus skin from infection and enhancing healthy development of fetus skin were described. The concept of bionic VC from plants and the possibility of them to be applied in the fourth generation of cosmetics—bionic cosmetics were prospected.
