Abstract
The effects of environmental enrichment on the behavior of captive great scansores were observed in the Fuzhou zoo.Four kinds of scansores,including two red-and-green macaw (Ara chloropterus),two blue-and-yellow macaw (Ara ararauna),two great hornbills (Buceros bicornis) and one oriental pied hornbill (Anthracoceros coronatus),were selected for this experiment.Environmental enrichment included installation of shelves,trees,ladders,toys and the use of special feeders to increase difficulty of food intake.Behaviors of the scansores before and after environmental enrichment were recorded daily by using scan-sampling method and all the data observed were analyzed by SPSS.The results showed that there were significant differences (P ＜ 0.01 or P ＜ 0.05) between before and after environmental enrichment in the time budgets,including resting,eating,moving,self-caring and grooming,especially in increased moving and natural behavior,reduced resting and stereotyped behaviors.The results indicated that environmental enrichment can significantly improve animal welfare and enhance the living environment of captive animals.关键词
