Abstract

The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of the combined use of Bacillus subtilis 048 (BS048) and fructooligosaccharide (FOS) on growth performance of Xueshan chickens and its mechanism.Nine hundred and eighty Xueshan chickens with similar weight were randomly divided into 2 groups with 7 replicates per group and 70 chickens per replicate.Chickens in the control group were fed a basal diet,and the others in the experimental group were fed the basal diet supplemented with 0.1% (W/W) BS048 and 0.08% (W/W) FOS.The experiment lasted for 80 days.The results showed as follows:compared with the control group,the average daily gain,average daily feed intake,duodenal digestive enzyme activities and cecal volatile fatty acid (VFA) contents in the experimental group were significantly increased (P<0.05),whereas the viscosity of intestinal chime was significantly decreased (P<0.01),and the feed to gain ratio and pH of intestinal chime had no significant changes (P>0.05).It is concluded that the combined use of BS048 and FOS not only reduce the viscosity of intestinal chyme and enhance the duodenal digestive enzyme activities to enhance intestinal digestive function,but also increase the cecal VFA contents to maintain and enhance intestinal health,thus improving the growth performance of Xueshan chickens.
