Abstract

Objective To investigate the effects and barriers of bilingual teaching in nursing skill courses of Fundamental Nursing. Methods A total of 115 nursing undergraduates in grade 2013 and 2014 were surveyed for their English competency, attitude towards bilingual teaching, assessment on bilingual teaching and problems of students and teachers in bilingual teaching. Results Of the 115 students surveyed, 21.7% of the respondents believed that they only understood 20.0% of the teaching content and students' English competency was the main obstacle for bilingual teaching, especially for their insufficient vocabularies. Meanwhile, teachers' English competency, particularly their oral English and pronunciation were the main influence factors of bilingual teaching. The effect of bilingual teaching varied among students with different English competencies (P<0.05). Conclusion The effect of bilingual teaching is unsatisfactory, but the bilingual teaching plays an important role in nursing skill courses of Fundamental Nursing. Improving teachers' oral English and adopting stratified teaching method are important ways to improve bilingual teaching.
