Abstract
The effect of rare earth Gd on microstructure and mechanical properties of as-cast Mg-5Zn-0.6Zr magnesium alloy was investigated by using optical microscope,scanning electron microscope,mechanical property test.The results show that as-cast microstructure of the Mg-5Zn-0.6Zr alloy consists ofα-Mg grains and MgZn2 phase.The coarse mesh MgZn2 phases were refined in the Mg-5Zn-0.6Zr alloy modified with rare earth Gd element.When the alloy was modified with 1.0 wt.% Gd,the ultimate strength and elongation reached to the maximum value and are 223 MPa and 7.6%,respectively.The improvement of mechanical properties of as-cast Mg-5Zn-0.6Zr magnesium alloy was attributed to the refinement of coarse MgZn2 phase and the formation of MgZnGd intermetallic compounds with the size of 2-5 μm,which could effectively hinder dislocation motion in the modified alloy.关键词
