A LCC and MMC Series Hybrid HVDC Topology Suitable for Bulk Power Overhead Line Transmission

Abstract
In this paper,a hybrid HVDC topology with line commutated converter (LCC) and modular multilevel converter (MMC) in series connection is proposed,suitable for bulk power overhead line transmission.This topology is flexible in operation in terms of active and reactive power control,and able to withstand ac and dc faults with cooperative control of LCC and MMC.First,operation principle and mathematical model are presented.Then,strategies coping with ac faults at rectifier and inverter side are discussed respectively,preventing current cut-off under ac fault at rectifier side and maintaining part of active power if LCC commutation failure occurs under ac fault at inverter side.Feasibility dealing with dc fault is theoretically demonstrated by analyzing characteristic of MMC under block state.A detailed control strategy for dc fault is further proposed combined with a test system.Finally,effectiveness of the control strategy for ac and dc faults is verified with time-domain simulation with the test system.关键词
