Abstract

Zinc bismuth borate transparent red glasses doped with Eu3+ (BBZE) were prepared by a rapid melt quenching technique. The general physical properties, including the refractive index, density, molar volume, europium ion concentration, oxygen packing density (OPD) and structure, along with the optical properties and the thermal stability of the glasses were investigated. The glass sample with 4%(mole fraction) Eu3+exhibits the maximum relative intensity of photoluminescence (PL) spectrum. An intense emission peak at 613nm appears in the emission spectra under 465nm excitation. [BO3] and [BiO3] units, as well as a few [BO4], appear in the glass samples; however, six–membered rings of [BO3] are formed in only the highly Eu3+–doped (6%) samples. The amorphous states of the glasses become more compact with the increase of the Eu3+ concentration. The values of the crystallization temperature (Tc) –the transition temperature (Tg) are great, indicating that the BBZE glasses have a good thermal stability. The BBZE glasses with a low melting temperature are expected to be applied into YAGsvia a phosphor-in-glass (PiG) approach for white light emitting diodes (WLEDs).
