Mechanism of Carbothemic Reduction of Alumina in Al2O3–C/Fe System

Abstract
The interactions in Al2O3–C/Fe system at 1973K (1700℃) during heating in different atmospheres were investigated by field emission scanning electronic microscopy, X-ray spectrometry and thermodynamics analysis, respectively. The results show that massive aluminium appears in Fe sample after heated in argon atmosphere, but no aluminium occurs in the Fe sample after heated in a resistance furnace with coke protection. The interactions among Al2O3–C/Fe system are affected due to different atmospheres. When CO gas flows out of Al2O3–C/Fe system quickly by flowing argon, the dissolution process of alumina into iron melt is accelerated since [O] is consumed by [C] to form CO gas. [C] is generated by the dissolution of graphite in iron melt. However, the steady presence of CO gas and CO2 gas in Al2O3–C/Fe system can prevent alumina from dissolving into iron melt in a resistance furnace with coke protection, thus resulting in the increase of carbon content in Fe sample.关键词
