Abstract

The invention of modular multilevel converters (MMCs) promotes the development of high voltage direct current transmission (HVDC) technology. With MMC-HVDC technology gradually expanding to overhead line transmission occasions, DC fault clearance and protection come to be particularly important. This paper studied the DC short-circuit fault characteristics of the bipolar MMC-HVDC system adopting overhead line. The equivalent circuit models under short-circuit fault by low resistance and high resistance were established respectively, and the analytic calculation formulas of fault current were deduced. Base on the PSCAD/EMTDC, a simulation model of bipolar system was built, and the simulation results verified the validity of the derivation formulas. Finally, an arm bypass protection method to cope with DC short-circuit fault was proposed. From the simulation results, it is concluded that this protection method can not only restrict the fault current of sub-module and DC side, but also shorten the fault recovery time, which plays a positive role in the fault protection for power electronic devices and AC system.
