A preliminary comparative experiment of different adhering substrates for abalone culture in the external bay area

Abstract

From March 6,2016 to May 3,2016,a feeding trial was designed to study the growth dynamics of the abalone with culture facilities of three different adhering substrates in the external Futou Bay sea area of Xiamei Town,Zhangpu County,Fujian Province.Three kinds of culture facilities were the new net cage of box type adhering substrates for abalone culture,the new net cage of double inclined adhering substrates for abalone culture and the conventional basin for abalone culture.The study used Haliotis discus hanai as an experimental shellfish model.The effective adhering areas of single adhering substrates for the three facities were as following:the box type was 1.072 8 m2,the double inclined adhering substrates was 1.993 5 m2,the conventional basin was 0.413 3 m2.The results showed that:1)For the new net cage of box type adhering substrates,the daily growth of shell length was 0.131 mm,the daily growth of weight was 0.129 g,the survival rate was 98.44% and the feed conversion rate was 3.38%;2)For the new net cage of double inclined adhering substrates,the daily growth of shell length was 0.098 mm,the daily growth of weight was 0.096 g,the survival rate was 99.38% and the feed conversion rate was 4.29%;3)For the conventional basin,the daily growth of shell length was 0.115 mm,the daily growth of weight was 0.103 g,the survival rate was 98.00% and the feed conversion rate was 5.37%.The facilities were free from the influence of the bad sea conditions in the external bay.The experimental results showed that the net cage of box type adhering substrates showed the best performances.The net cage for abalone culture based this adhering substrates had the advantages including high culture efficiency,strong resistance to wind waves,less requirement of labor,low intensity of labor and so on under the auxiliary operation of economical steeve.This type was suitable for abalone culture in external area of bay.
