Abstract

Active flow control is one of the leading areas of research of many scientists and engineers in aeronautics, astronautics, and fluid mechanics.One of the greatest challenges in making active flow control technology practical and efficient is the development of a high performance synthetic jet with more advantages and functions, but without problem of environmental adaption.This article reviews dual synthetic jets and its flow control technology in National University of Defense Technology.A theory of synthetic jet has been put forward, which based upon principles of pressure increasing and comprehensive utilization of energy.A series of new actuators have been invented, including dual synthetic jets actuator (DSJA), vectoring dual synthetic jets actuator, dual synthetic jets actuator based continuous flow actuator, hot and cold dual synthetic jets actuator, self-support dual synthetic jets actuator and so on.The novelty that the two cavities sharing the same diaphragm makes the DSJA not only resolves the problems of pressure loading of the synthetic jet actuators (SJAs), but also doubles the efficiency and frequency, and especially has a unique thrust-vectoring characteristic that the SJAs haven′t.A cause control theory based on causal logic of flow phenomenon has been proposed.The applications of DSJ on separation flow control, jet vectoring control, hypersonic These indicate the DSJA has double control efficiency of SJA and also extend the applications of the synthetic jets to more flow control systems that cannot be implemented by the existing SJAs.
