Horizontal muscle surgery combined with inferior oblique muscle weakening to treat childhood strabismus

Abstract
Objective To evaluate the effects of horizontal muscle strengthening/weakening combined inferior oblique cutting/weakening on strabismus in children.Methods 80 strabismic patients with hyper-functioning inferior oblique were enrolled from out hospital between January 2013 and 2014.Patients received either horizontal muscle strengthening/weakening alone (n=40), or combined with inferior oblique weakening (n=40).Results The efficacy of the surgery was 97.5% in children received combined surgeries.This rate is significantly higher than that in children received horizontal correction only (87.5%;P<0.05).Inferior oblique function returned to normal in 87.5% of the children who received combined surgeries, significantly higher than that in control group (72.5%;P<0.05).Conclusions Inferior oblique weakening combined with horizontal muscle correction is effective in treating strabismus in children.关键词
