Experiments on temperature effect of hydraulic conductivity of compacted clay

Abstract

The hydraulic conductivities of compacted clay at various temperatures were tested with different methods, the improved GDS full-automatic geoenvironmental permeameter ( with a flexible wall) and Nan-55 permeameter ( with a rigid wall) . Results show that the hydraulic conductivity increased with temperature, and they were positively linearly related in a semi-logarithmic plane;the rates of increase of hydraulic conductivity from tests with a flexible wall and rigid wall were, respectively, up to 5. 5 and 2. 7 times higher at 70℃ than at 20℃. The hydraulic conductivity obtained from the GDS permeameter was larger than that obtained from the Nan-55 permeameter under the same dry density, due to different sample sizes and preparation methods in the two hydraulic tests. Assuming that the viscosity and density changed with temperature, while, the intrinsic permeability of compacted clay was invariable, the estimated hydraulic conductivity varying with temperature agreed with measured results, implying that the change in fluid properties contributed greatly to the increase of the hydraulic conductivity. However, there were certain differences between estimated and measured results of hydraulic conductivity, because the intrinsic permeability changed with temperature in real conditions. For the sample at a confining pressure of 55 kPa, the intrinsic permeability obtained from the GDS permeameter increased significantly with temperature, and the estimated hydraulic conductivity was larger than measured results; while, the intrinsic permeability obtained from the Nan-55 permeameter decreased slightly with the increase of temperature, and there was little difference between the estimated and measured results of hydraulic conductivity.
