Characterization of Elastic Modulus of Eigen-line in Polyethylene Pipe Joints Based on Microindentation Technique

摘要

Abstract

The elastic modulus of base material,welded zone and eigen-line in butt joints of polyethylene pipe was measured through microindentation tests,and the distribution of elastic modulus around eigen-line was obtained.Phased-array ultrasonic testing was also employed to get ultrasonic images of the butt joints.Results show that peaks exist in the distribution of elastic modulus,which are corresponding to the eigen-line in ultrasonic images,suggesting that elastic modulus of eigen-line is different from that of base material and welded zone.Further analysis reveals that the average elastic modulus of eigen-line rises by 4.7%~5.6% over the base material and welded zone,indicating that the welding process has an influence on the mechanical property of material around the eigen-line,which leads to the appearance of eigen-line in ultrasonic images.
