Abstract

Two forming techniques including catenary continuous vulcanization (CCV) and vertical continuous vulcanization (VCV) are adopted to produce medium voltage and high voltage cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) cables at present.110 kV/800 mm2 XLPE cables produced by CCV and VCV were selected for heating treatment and infrared spectroscopy technology was used for analyzing and studying crosslink byproducts in the insulating layer before and after heating treatment.Experimental results indicate that there are crosslink byproducts of acetophenone, cumyl alcohol and α-methylstyrene in the insulating layer of cables after heating treatment.Residual volume of acetophenone in VCV-cable is larger and other residue contents are basically almost the same.Contents of acetophenone and α-methylstyrene in CCV-cable after heating treatment obviously decrease but the content of cumyl alcohol has no definite change before and after heating treatment.Byproducts in the outer cable volatilize more thoroughly with less residue contents than those in the inner cable.
