Abstract

Fault location and classification is of great significance in comprehensive fault diagnosis of distribution network, which is helpful for local fault isolation and fast troubleshooting. The distributed connection of distributed generation (DG) in low voltage distribution network turns it to an active one. In low voltage active distribution network (LVADN), the change of fault characteristics brings a lot of trouble to the protection coordination and makes the previous fault location and classification methods inapplicable. To solve this problem, a novel on-line fault section location and classification method only using current measurement for LVADN was proposed in this paper. This method firstly divided the system into several two-terminal sections; secondly, it used the current phase-angle difference of each section for fast fault section judgment and fault phase selection; thirdly, in each fault section, fault phase selection result and the node zero-sequence current was utilized for fast fault classification; finally, the fault location and the corresponding fault type was obtained by collecting the fault discriminant information of all the sections in the system. The correctness and effectiveness of the proposed method has been verified by Matlab/Simulink Simulation, and it can be used in LVADN under various circumstances, such as three-phase balanced or unbalanced, grid-connected or isolated and arborescent or ring structure.
